2024 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topicals Meeting Series

The 2024 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topicals Meeting Series is currently sponsoring a Photonics workshop in Barbados, where a wide variety of subject matter experts have convened to discuss quantum sensing, fiber optic cable design, security, protection, and fiber sensing technologies such as Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), State of Polarization (SOP) and laser interferometry methods. Technical sessions and workshops are being offered each day of this three-day meeting, to present applications and issues for land, infrastructure, and marine sensing.

One invited speaker from the #SMART Cables JTF will be presenting “Science Monitoring And Reliable Telecommunications (SMART) Cables - A New Frontier in Global Climate and Hazard Observations.” This talk will present the SMART Cables initiative, introduce the important oceanographic, geophysical and natural hazard observation capacity anticipated by deployment of the SMART Cables, and will give a brief update on projects underway and planned. The idea of SMART Cables and their potential to employ complementary discrete sensor plus DAS has attracted interest at the meeting.
