“Observing the Ocean and Earth with SMART Subsea Cables” seminar at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science – IRIDeS, Tohoku University.

Bruce Howe from the ITU/WMO/UNESCO-IOC Joint Task Force on SMART Subsea Cables Initiative gave the seminar “Observing the Ocean and Earth with SMART Subsea Cables” on 3 June at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science – IRIDeS, Tohoku University. The seminar provided an overview of the SMART initiative and shared updates on two newly contracted systems: the Tamtam system connecting Vanuatu and New Caledonia, and the Atlantic CAM system connecting Lisbon, Azores and Madeira in a ring, both to be installed in 2026.

The presentation highlighted the potential of these systems for early warning of seismic and tsunami events, and their application in monitoring climate, ocean circulation and heat content, and sea level rise. Future opportunities with Japan and other global partners were also discussed.

Thank you Erick Mas, IRIDeS, and Tohoku University for your hospitality!
