SMART Cables is excited to participate as a side event in the Immersed in Change conference 7-8 June 2024 in Costa Rica, one of the planning activities in advance of the Third UN Ocean Conference in June 2025 in Nice, France.
By integrating environmental sensing, the SMART Cables Initiative leverages the submarine telecommunication cable industry to create a global ocean and earth observing network, enhancing our understanding of climate change, ocean warming, sea level rise, tsunamis, and earthquakes. All part of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).
Dr. Silvia Chacón Barrantes will present the Initiative, highlighting the Tamtam system (Vanuatu-New Caledonia) and the Atlantic CAM system (Portugal-Azores-Madeira ring), both to be installation in 2026. The Initiative, led by the ITU/WMO/UNESCO-IOC Joint Task Force on SMART Subsea Cables supported by UN agencies, fosters collaboration between governments, the telecom industry, and the scientific community, promoting innovative solutions for a safer and more informed global community. 🌐
The side event will be held 1:30pm – 2:30pm Friday 7 June in the Snapper Room at the Costa Rica Convention Center in Heredia.
