The Congress will feature a mix of plenary sessions, including opening and keynote speeches, alongside parallel oral and poster presentations. To enhance interactions between science and society, action and policy, and to engage civil society more broadly, 'townhalls' such as panels and roundtables will also be arranged.

Participation is open to the ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, ITU Academia, and to any individual from a country that is a member of the ITU and who wishes to contribute to the work. This includes individuals who are also members of international, regional and national organizations. Participation is free of charge.

Chile - Antarctic Cable Project with SMART capability
Chile with SUBTEL as leading institution and CAF as finance entity are betting on SMART capability caring about the science and society. The goal is to strengthen connectivity and scientific collaboration among multiple countries, promoting regional integration, research, and the advancement of scientific knowledge. The SMART capability is included in the call for public tender.

SMART Cables is excited to participate as a side event in the Immersed in Change conference 7-8 June 2024 in Costa Rica, one of the planning activities in advance of the Third UN Ocean Conference in June 2025 in Nice, France.

The SMART Subsea Cables team was thrilled to participate in the annual Submarine Networks EMEA conference, held in London, UK, from May 29-30.

Bruce Howe from the ITU/WMO/UNESCO-IOC Joint Task Force on SMART Subsea Cables Initiative gave the seminar “Observing the Ocean and Earth with SMART Subsea Cables” on 3 June at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science – IRIDeS, Tohoku University.

SMART Cable Visit to the National University of Vanuatu
The SMART Cable team had a wonderful visit to the National University of Vanuatu (NUV), where we met with 30 students to brief them about getting a master degree on topics related to SMART cables, from ocean and geophysics science to early warning to telecom and management.

The SMART Cable team attended the ICG/PTWS Scientific meeting of experts in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
The region from Papua New Guinea to Vanuatu is one if not the most complicated tectonic region of the world, with a number of “high speed” (10-15 cm/year) tectonic plates colliding producing megathrust subduction zones, all giving rise to high earthquake and tsunami risk. The #goal of the workshop is to quantify seismic risk as an input to tsunami inundation models.
