SMART Cables Report at the 9th ICG/PTWS-IUGG Joint Tsunami Commission Technical Workshop and ICG/PTWS-XXXI

Ceci Rodríguez Cruz presented the latest Report of the SMART Subsea Cables Joint Task Force at the 9th ICG/PTWS-IUGG Joint Tsunami Commission Technical Workshop and the Thirty-First Session of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/PTWS-XXXI), held in Beijing, China.

This important gathering brought together experts, scientists, and decision-makers from across the Pacific to enhance regional collaboration and strengthen early warning and mitigation systems for tsunamis and ocean-related hazards.

The SMART Report highlighted:

  • Significant progress of the SMART Cables initiative across multiple regions

  • Updates on funded systems in Portugal and France

  • Key developments in the Pacific, particularly the Tamtam system between Vanuatu and New Caledonia

  • The growing global collaboration driving the integration of environmental sensors (seismic, pressure, temperature) into subsea telecom cables to benefit science and society.

We are grateful to the IOC/UNESCO Secretariat, host country China, and all participating Member States for their support and engagement.
